How Unitree’s $9 Billion IPO Became a $38 Billion Onchain Story

Unitree priced its Shanghai IPO at RMB150.80 a share, or roughly $9.04B after issuance. A synthetic pre-IPO perpetual—delivering neither shares nor votes—briefly implied nearly $38B. The gap is not a clean contest between two smart markets. It is four different prices: regulated scarcity, leveraged access, operating earnings and founder control.

One Company, Four Prices

The offering document shows 40.45M new shares, about 10% of post-money equity. At RMB150.80, proceeds are roughly RMB6.1B and the post-money value is near RMB61B, or $9.04B. The Information had earlier reported a $610M fundraising target.

TikHub’s latest Unitree sample repeatedly surfaced a second number: a synthetic pre-IPO perpetual mapped mechanically onto post-money equity implied nearly $38B. Yet Talos explains that these contracts are cash-settled and confer no ownership. Unitree’s market only began trading around $54 on August 4.

The two numbers price different rights. Shanghai IPO allocation is shaped by a 10% new-share supply and eligibility rules. The synthetic market is shaped by thin liquidity, leverage, settlement design and global investors unable to access the A-share allocation. The gap measures structure before it measures intrinsic value.

A 219x P/E Is a Forecast, Not a Fact

The prospectus shows revenue rising from RMB159M in 2023 to RMB393M in 2024 and RMB1.70B in 2025. Main-business gross margin reached 60.13%, net profit RMB278M and operating cash flow RMB670M.

The accounting requires care. Share compensation widened the gap between reported and adjusted profit; R&D expense fell from 31.39% of revenue in 2023 to 8.53% in 2025 even as absolute spending increased. Robots still require supply chain, inventory, service, training data and reinvestment.

Q1 2026 was the stress test: revenue grew 68.49% to RMB423M, while net profit fell 47.69% and adjusted profit fell 52.55% as R&D and sales spending rose. At roughly 219.23x earnings versus an industry average around 38.56x, investors are buying an industrialization future that has not yet arrived.

The Quality Question Behind 5,500 Shipments

TechNode reported more than 5,500 humanoid shipments in 2025. AP found China shipped more than 13,000 humanoids in total, with Unitree and AgiBot each above 5,000 while U.S. peers remained in the hundreds. Supply-chain and price advantages are real.

But a research lab, a data-collection buyer, a performance venue and an industrial line have different repeat rates, service costs and willingness to pay. The moat must show up as lower actuator cost, faster task deployment from proprietary data, and customers expanding orders in year two. Without all three, leadership may be speed and novelty rather than a platform.

Three Investor Frameworks

Ordinary shareholders hold keys outside a maze while one controlling hand operates the robot master lever, illustrating super-voting control

Graham, Damodaran and Howard MarksReverse the price into operating facts that must become true

  • Graham: a 219x earnings multiple leaves little margin of safety. A large robotics market is not a buffer against execution error.
  • Damodaran: the platform story must map into commercial mix, contribution margin, reinvestment and moat duration. Use the Valuefocus reverse DCF instead of increasing revenue growth alone.
  • Howard Marks: first-level thinking sees the first humanoid stock and oversubscription. Second-level thinking asks whether demand is for the business or for scarce tradable access.

The 65.31% Voting-Control Discount

The issuance filing says the founder and his controlled platform will own about 31.29% but control 65.31% of votes after the IPO. Minority investors buy economics without symmetrical influence over capital allocation or strategic changes.

Super-voting control can protect long-horizon R&D, but it also weakens the correction mechanism when strategy, acquisitions or related-party decisions disappoint. The same cash flow therefore deserves a higher discount rate or lower terminal multiple.

LatePost’s interview with Meituan DragonBall adds context: Meituan-related entities invested more than RMB400M and own about 9.65%, the largest external bloc. Strategic backers are useful only if their networks convert into durable commercial orders.

Three Scenarios, Six Falsification Metrics

Bear: education and showcase demand slows, industrial validation takes longer, and service/customization erodes margin. Value it as hardware and apply a governance discount.

Base: China’s supply-chain edge persists, humanoid revenue grows rapidly and industrial mix improves gradually. Anchor value to free cash flow, repeat orders and contribution profit.

Bull: motion control, actuator cost, training data and developer tooling form a reinforcing platform; software and service revenue rise. Only then is a platform terminal premium defensible.

Update six metrics each quarter: commercial/industrial revenue mix, contribution profit per unit, absolute R&D and R&D ratio, inventory and receivables turns, operating cash flow versus adjusted profit, and expansion purchases by existing customers.

BearIndustrial delay, expenses surgeHardware peers plus governance discountGrowth and profit fall together

TikHub Is a Controversy Radar, Not Valuation Proof

On August 17, Valuefocus pulled 15 latest TikHub posts for “Unitree IPO.” They clustered around performance demonstrations, the $9B offer and 219x P/E, and a $38B synthetic mapping plus scarcity anxiety among investors unable to access the offering.

Author fields were missing and every like/repost field returned zero. The sample cannot support a reliable heat ranking, and social claims of 8,000x demand were not treated as official facts. Price, shares, financials and voting control come from filings; industry shipments from independent reporting; synthetic-market claims from contract mechanics.

The final conclusion is not anti-robotics. Unitree can be an excellent company, an important manufacturing breakthrough and a stock that prices success too early—all at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

What is Unitree’s IPO price and valuation?

RMB150.80 per share for 40.45M new shares, about 10% of post-money equity, implying roughly RMB61B or $9.04B.

Is the $38B onchain valuation real equity value?

No. It is a mechanical mapping from a cash-settled pre-IPO perpetual. The contract delivers no shares, dividends or voting rights.

Why is a 219x P/E risky?

It requires rapid future profit growth. Q1 2026 revenue rose 68.49%, but adjusted profit fell 52.55%, showing the cost of commercialization.

What could be Unitree’s durable moat?

Actuator and supply-chain cost, motion control and training data, commercial repeat purchases, developer tooling and service capability working as one loop.

Do not substitute “first humanoid stock” for valuation. Use Valuefocus reverse DCF to put growth, margin, reinvestment and governance discount into one scenario model.
