Meituan Is Profitable Again. A Delivery Ceasefire Is Not a Moat.
The most revealing number in Meituan’s quarter is not 490% profit growth. It is one percentage point. At second-quarter revenue, that change in core local commerce margin equals roughly 27% of group operating profit. Earnings have returned; whether they stay may depend on the next round of competitors’ coupons.

One recovery quarter has not repaired the half-year
Meituan’s August 28 results showed Q2 revenue of RMB104.643B, up 14.4%; period profit of RMB2.155B, up 490%; and operating profit of RMB2.691B. Adjusted net profit was RMB2.524B. These figures should never be interchanged.
China Securities Journal’s report also records a first-half loss of RMB4.672B. Annualizing the recovery quarter would risk capitalizing seasonality and a quieter competitive environment as permanent earnings.
Management attributed improvement partly to more rational competition, seasonal consumption and operating efficiency in grocery retail and international businesses. Becoming stronger and facing temporarily less aggressive rivals are economically different sources of profit.
A cost advantage is not ownership of the savings
Delivery density can create genuine value: more orders on similar routes can make the network harder to replicate. But consumers can use multiple apps, and merchants can sell across platforms. An expensive-to-copy network does not guarantee exclusive ownership of its profit pool.
Cost leadership asks who can deliver more cheaply. Value retention asks whether the savings belong to shareholders, couriers, merchants or the next coupon campaign. The most efficient platform can win orders without earning exceptional returns on capital.
Here, ceasefire means softer competitive spending, not an agreement among companies. Public disclosures do not let us isolate how much of period profit came from efficiency versus reduced competition. A precise allocation would be false precision.
A stronger test would compare delivery cost, retention and after-incentive contribution in comparable cities and order baskets. Changes in order value or business mix are not automatically evidence of a stronger delivery moat. Missing comparable disclosures should reduce confidence.
Why one margin point can move group profit by 27%
Reported core local commerce revenue was RMB71.531B, with operating profit of RMB5.668B and a margin near 7.9%. One percentage point of that revenue is RMB0.71531B: about 26.6% of group operating profit.
The table changes only the core segment’s margin. Revenue and all other costs and consolidation items are fixed. It is mechanical sensitivity, not a forecast, DCF or conversion of operating profit into free cash flow.
| Core margin change | Quarterly group operating profit | Versus baseline |
|---|---|---|
| −2 percentage points | RMB1.260B | About −53% |
| −1 percentage point | RMB1.976B | About −27% |
| Reported baseline | RMB2.691B | 0 |
| +1 percentage point | RMB3.406B | About +27% |

LatePost’s grocery story complicates the peace narrative
LatePost reported on August 24 that PDD was redirecting management resources toward Duoduo Maicai and essential consumption. That is not evidence of an imminent food-delivery price war, and grocery volumes cannot be equated with restaurant-delivery share. It does suggest the boundaries of high-frequency household spending remain contested.
A cheap dinner, next-day vegetables and instantly delivered essentials are different purchases, but potentially competing gateways into the same household budget. Valuation should not assume that quiet among today’s direct rivals prevents adjacent businesses from repricing customer acquisition.
If AI reduces costs, who captures the return?
Meituan disclosed quarterly R&D spending of RMB7.7B, up 22.5%, and applications including its Xiaotuan assistant and merchant agents. R&D expense is not realized AI profit, and the earnings rebound cannot simply be attributed to AI.
The relevant calculation is incremental: savings in dispatch, service and merchant operations, less model and development costs, less savings returned through incentives. If competitors gain similar efficiencies, consumers could benefit before platform margins do.
This does not dismiss AI. It replaces model ownership as an investment story with a harder question: can productivity gains produce durable cash contribution per order?
Three investing frameworks, three separate tests

Framework applications, not the investors’ views on MeituanSeparate competitive advantage from cash retained by shareholders
- Buffett-style moat test: can the low-cost network retain customers and profits when rivals spend more? Scale is an input; durable returns on capital are the outcome.
- Munger-style inversion: imagine the recovery fails. Would renewed incentives, multi-app switching or cash-hungry expansion be the most plausible cause? Define failure before writing the growth story.
- Damodaran-style valuation: model long-run margin, growth and reinvestment separately. Do not annualize a strong seasonal quarter and then add an unsupported AI premium.
Four questions for the next earnings release
First, do order density and purchase frequency hold when coupons decline? Second, does margin improvement survive seasonal shifts? Third, does narrowing new-business loss translate into better cash generation? Fourth, do AI-related unit savings exceed incremental investment? If key denominators are missing, mark them unknown rather than substituting GMV growth.
The bullish counterargument is testable: margins improve despite intense competition, new businesses stop consuming core cash, and AI reduces real fulfillment expense. Such evidence would justify revising long-run cash-generation assumptions, not simply relaxing risk standards after a quarterly beat.
Yicai’s reporting connects more prudent incentives with delivery-business improvement. That supports spending intensity as an important variable; it does not lock in next year’s competitive behavior.
Use reverse DCF to identify the long-run cash flow implied by price, then stress the competitive assumptions. The value-trap checklist helps distinguish temporary recovery from lasting repair.
Meituan does not need a world without competition to deserve attention. It needs to demonstrate that its advantages still become shareholders’ money when competition becomes expensive again. The premium belongs to profits that survive the ceasefire, not to the ceasefire itself.

Frequently asked questions
How much did Meituan earn in Q2 2026?
Period profit was RMB2.155B, operating profit RMB2.691B and adjusted net profit RMB2.524B. They have different definitions. First-half losses were still RMB4.672B.
How is the 27% sensitivity calculated?
RMB71.531B of core revenue multiplied by 1% equals RMB0.71531B. Dividing by RMB2.691B of group operating profit gives about 26.6%. Revenue and all other items are held fixed; this is not a forecast.
Does this mean Meituan has no moat?
No. Delivery density and fulfillment infrastructure may provide cost advantages. The unresolved question is how much cash shareholders retain when subsidy competition intensifies.
Did TikHub validate social popularity?
No. The site’s TikHub-backed topic feed failed for both 美团 and Meituan on August 31, 2026. No social rank, sentiment percentage or zero-discussion claim is made.
