Cerebras Cloud Revenue Jumped 281%. Is an AI Chip Innovator Becoming a Low-Margin Cloud Landlord?
Cerebras runs GPT-5.6 Sol at 750 tokens per second and reports $25.4B of RPO. Yet hardware revenue fell, GAAP gross margin was 14%, and shares dropped 16%. The issue is whether a chip moat is becoming a capital-intensive cloud business.

A Guidance Raise the Market Rejected
The Information highlighted declining hardware revenue as shares fell 16%. Total revenue reached $180.1M but missed $194.2M expectations.
Cloud now represents roughly 70% of GAAP revenue. Cerebras increasingly owns utilization, power, leasing and financing risk rather than simply selling systems.
Two Margin Realities
GAAP gross margin was 14%; core margin was 41%. Adjustments remove warrants, stock compensation and data-center pass-through items, but those can still represent customer acquisition, dilution and infrastructure economics.
The $450.5M net loss included $386.6M of stock compensation. Non-cash is not the same as free for shareholders.
Backlog as a Capital Promise
The $25.4B RPO equals almost 29 times 2026 core revenue guidance. Delivering it requires more than 600MW of capacity and a greater than tenfold manufacturing expansion.
OpenAI is simultaneously a major customer and the source of a roughly $1B working-capital loan. Three customers represented 86% of receivables in Q1.

The Masters’ Test
Buffett asks how much incremental capital growth consumes. Munger inverts intertwined customer financing. Graham starts with GAAP. Fisher tests whether the speed advantage survives multiple product cycles. Marks separates a great company from a great price.
Use the reverse DCF to test what revenue, margins and utilization a roughly $55B valuation already assumes.

Why did Cerebras shares fall?
Revenue missed estimates, hardware sales declined and adjusted margin contracted sequentially.
What are the main risks?
Customer concentration, cloud capital intensity, dilution, competition and utilization.
Model cloud margin, utilization, concentration and dilution—not just speed and RPO.
